xorg.conf question

I don't have a xorg.conf file, I have xorg.conf.bak and xorg.conf.bak2.
KDE starts fine I can set the my new LCD monitor to the correct resolution even though neither xorgs include it.
?????????

Re: xorg.conf question

Autodetection does its magic, no xorg.conf needed. But it never hurts to have a xorg.conf, soon enough you'll find a default that doesn't suit you.

Re: xorg.conf question

it is either awesome autodetection, (from personal experience, I'd be surprised, very surprised) .. chances are that you are have /etc/X11/XF86Config

Re: xorg.conf question

Yeah, Xorg will run with no config file, but it uses a lot of default settings. If you have anything other than a 15 year old graphics card you'll want to set up your own config file because by default X will use the 'vesa' driver. Vesa doesn't provide many features and it limits you to the resolutions defined by VESA (Video Electronics Standard Association).

The way I always generate a default configuration file is by running 'Xorg -configure' from a root prompt in a terminal. This will give you a fairly basic config file at /root/xorg.conf.new which you can edit to your needs and then copy to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
If you aren't sure what driver you need for your graphics card, post the output from lspci and/or tell us what make/model your graphics card is.

Re: xorg.conf question

X -configure does the same job and is sufficient most of the time.

Use UNIX or die.
