I have seen several posts about this matter but I wanted to know if this applies as well. Ever since I did a full system upgrade today and restarted my computer, I now have no sound when playing videos or navigating through websites that contain sound (ex. myspace). However, I still can listen to music using applications that play music media (cds and mp3s). After doing a research on this through the arch linux forums I have gathered that it is possibly the kernel upgrade that has affected sound somehow. Would this be true in my case? If so, how can I downgrade to an earlier version to enable sound until this has been fixed my the developers?

What kernel did you upgrade to? What are the versions for the alsa packages you are running? (pacman -Qs alsa)
I don't have this problem myself so I won't be of much help, just thought I'd get a head start on asking for the info other people might need to solve the problem!;)

p.s. a friend of mine running arch linux was experiencing the same exact problem as well. He's more of a linux guru than I am and he couldn't even figure it out at the time.

Can anyone help at all? This is becoming extremely frustrating since everything was working fine until that damn full system upgrade. I don't understand why upgrades have to throw everything out of whack. I've tried everything, including removing alsa and reinstalling it and running alsaconf. I have checked all mixers to make sure nothing is muted and everything is set properly. I tried to open an .mpg file using mplayer and receive an error message: [JACK] cannot open server. This was also working before the upgrade. I try playing a wmv video through xine (which worked as well before the upgrade), now I have no sound coming from this. Also, sites that contain sound such as youtube and myspace does not work at all. Music on the other hand, (cds and mp3s) work just fine. What the hell is going on? I want to rollback to previous version of alsa or the kernel if this is the case.

Ok, this is a wild shoot, is there any chance you have dropped from the audio group?

No, I just checked the group file in the /etc directory and my user name is listed after audio.

Never mind I got it to work again. I added 'esd' to my array of daemons and now it works. That's strange because it wasn't there before and it worked just fine.
