Ati x700 pcie, XGL, Beryl And the fglrx Driver

Hello Mates,
I'm trying to immigrate back to Arch from Ubuntu.
The main reason, is the Vmware issues with Ubuntu, and, of course i need a better&faster distro.
I had some experience with arch in the past, but that was long time ago.

Anyways,

I asked google.. and sew that arch had some issues with the fglrx driver and the beryl,xgl packages.

I looked up the forum search, but the last relevant post was almost month ago.

I don't want to use the open source drivers for my ati card, because i need to stick with the performance.

Has anyone solved this issue?

Has a newer packages released?

If I'll download the drivers from the official ati site, will it work with beryl&xgl?

Xgl, beryl and fglrx from the repo worked fine for me a couple of weeks ago. I uninstalled them though because I like openbox better but I don't expect things to have changed.

fglrx is an Ati problem, not Arch specific. The best way to go in Linux is to choose Nvidia. Maybe it's okay with Ati in 4-5 years from now.

fglrx is an Ati problem, not Arch specific. The best way to go in Linux is to choose Nvidia. Maybe it's okay with Ati in 4-5 years from now.

Yes and NO.

First, I would like to mention that it really annoys me that ati&amd do nothing for the linux users community,
We're their customers too, and besides, linux goes mainstream lately.
They could at least release their driver source, if they don't want to spend their time on us.

I got my computer two years ago, as present, so i couldn't choose the hardware specs.
btw, two years ago, the drivers were just fine.

We can blame ati (that's really their fault) but it doesn't say we can igonre those who fell a victim to their scam-linux-compitable products.

My ati radeon x700, pcie 256 serve me pretty good for gaming, and i don't have the money or
any other reason to replace it in the next two years.
of course, i won't forgive ati, and that's my last product from this company (including amd)

Besides, ubuntu can handle fglrx+xgl+ati.

I'm still using fglrx, but I have dropped xgl and beryl. Fglrx (repo version) works fine here on xorg and it did on xgl too.
I'm using an ati x600 with 256mb so that's very close to yours.

Look at some Ubuntu forums, many people do have massive problems with ATI too. I don't say Nvidia is the best, but it's the best driver so far in Linux/FreeBSD. It's hard to make an open-source operating system "compatible" toward some binary driver.

But when you can't change your graphics card, it is my case, because it is a laptop you have to use what is available.

I am running Compiz git + fglrx + xgl and it's working nicely. I tried the open source drivers but the performance is ugly and the video playback worst.

Thanks everyone, it works like a charm.

As i hoped, the fglrx works fine & smooth with xgl+beryl.

Installing ati driver on arch is simpler than ever!

Arch is just getting better and better...
