I can't power off my c2d laptop

nicholas@11:54:30:~$ uname -a
Linux LNZJU 2.6.19-beyond #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Dec 15 17:41:19 EST 2006 i686 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU         T5600  @ 1.83GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

I've tried the following commond, but it always hangs with the screen displaying "Power off"

shutdown -h now
halt -p
poweroff

BTW: I can reboot and laptop.

Please check if the ACPI daemon is running.

do you have the splashy 0.3.2-5 package installed? i had the same problem yesterday with that package. after uninstalling splashy for now, i can shut down again. i have a c2d aswell.

I haven't installed that package.
I have been using linux for 3 years, and I suspect there's  something wrong with the kernel.
