This makes microsoft and novell's patent deal look lovely!

Well, microsoft even has a software patent on the usual doubleclick functionality in several programs (double-clickt selects text, double click opens folders, strg+click selects more files/folders) written around in about 7 pages so noone would understand or read it anyway. Anyway, i doubt they'd stand in front of a lawsuite.
I'd like to know which patents else they have... i'd be very interested in this.
Allthough, about 235 or shall there be 500 patents, it doesn't seem too much for the os community, so it can get rid of this.
That's what alredy has been said. First they laugh about you, then they compete with you and then they sue you and afterall .. they loose.
I would like to know how many patents of oracle are violated by microsoft sql server ... i'd really love to know that.
Basically, the deal of MS would be okay. If it concerned the whole os community. Every program written can voilate MS patents, and every software written by MS can violate other patents. Why not? Fair competition...

There's a write up on groklaw about this, groklaw was started as a blog covering the SCOvIBM lawsuit which has panned out to cover lots of other legal issues.

The Redmond behemoth asserts that one reason free software is of such high quality is that it violates more than 200 of Microsoft's patents.
This sounds like a contradiction to me. I'd love to see a court turn around to M$ and say prove it and show everybody your code so they can see for themselves. But I think that would be the last thing they'd want to do because I'm sure there's alot of stuff in there they've pinched from others. But I guess that's not gonna happen in my lifetime.
Ahh well! I love a good fight, to arms.

I don't know if they have the nuts to go on curt against oracle, redhat, ibm and other patent holders.
Anyway, i've read the article whompus posted, and i really liked it. It gives another point of view, and as long as Microsoft does not show up all the patents violated, it's nothing else than trying to threat customers to use microsoft products furthermore OR to pay.
I personally dislike software patents, and it really shows up that the guys of GPL are looking into the future. It's a threat what microsoft does, a threat against everyone who does not want a deal for any price with them.
Also, Novells customers are protected for Microsoft patents. Well, okay, fine, but Microsoft can't use Novells patents against anyone, and i doubt that novell will stand up against the community in this concern.
I must thank companies as IBM, Oracle, RedHat and Google, for being smart enough for not signing a deal like this.

I wish Microsoft all the luck in the world.
By the bye, the Slashdot commentaries are, for a change, quite interesting on this one.

"matter of principle," lol. M$ ripped off just about every aspect of DOS and their beginning windows systems from apple, xerox, ibm, etc. now they want "royalties" from linux users? they can go fvck themselves

I say MS will get, what it deserves. Maybe not now, but maybe tomorrow.

I've been waiting for this day for a long time! This could be a very good thing for Linux in the long run. M$ may have very well bitten off more than they can chew.

I hope they choke on it, and take Novell along.
Such a disgrace.

When I read this, I laughed for a couple of minutes and continued writing software...
They will never try to get them in court, and it they do it would be fun if the judge uses *unix or he/she has a BSOD when reading the charge for the last time before court .
