I'm just posting this here in case someone misses the front page news item, I know some of you lurk on just the forums
The x86_64 team is a bit short on manpower, so we're looking to take on a few new package maintainers.
If you've got a 64-bit system and the skills to help out, check out the job posting.

Is this a paid position? How much time is it likely to require?

It is not a paid position, everyone that works on Arch is a volunteer, no one gets paid anything. However the job does come with fame, glory, and good humor. You are likely to put as much time into it as you are willing to, being that it's volunteer work you are pretty much in control of that. However to be doing a decent job I'd say a few hours a week, depending on the week and what kind of load you decide to take on. The time comittment may also depend on how many others join the team, the more the merrier, and the thinner the work spreads.

Man, I wish I knew my way around a little more in the depths you developers dwindle in. I've got so much free time, and I love doing that stuff, but I know I'm not up to the level you guys are.

- I don't know the first thing about autotools.
- I don't feel like I'm around here for long enough.
- int free_time = rand(0,15); on a weekly basis, taken as a percentage. mainly because I have three other projects running with rolling deadlines for yesterday (+girlfriend). but a few hours a week won't kill me... as the old wise man on the mountain said: the only time you have is the time you take, no more, no less.
barring those three (critical) points, oh I'd love to do that!

I would be willing to consider becoming a TU, but I'm not sure that I'll have enough time for anything further.

I send an email to Andy but he didn't answer me. Have any decision been taken yet?

We're going over it on the developer's list.

i have forwarded your email to the internal dev mailing list. i hope you follow our mailing lists. then you should know that i have asked for some small changes for no more beeing a 100% i686 clone: http://archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-dev … 00642.html
so far one "enabler" from the core team rejected my suggestions. i'm waiting for other "enablers" opinion.
don't expect me to continue the port as a clone.

As far as I know, no one rejected anything. Questions were raised, sure, but you never responded.
The last mail in the chain from Jason ( here: http://archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-dev … 00648.html ) doesn't have any rejection. We're trying to open discussion with you. It's a two way street.
Perhaps you could respond to Jason's questions there? If you have lost interest in maintaining Arch64 as it is, I don't know how far this "looking for developers" will really go.
don't expect me to continue the port as a clone.
This comes across as quite standoffish. We all understand you are frustrated. That is what this thread it for. Help. We understand that you only have 2 people doing all the work - that's what we're trying to fix here. The least you could do is recognize that - we're trying to help you.

AndyRTR, you bring so much to Arch (and Linux in general), and I recognize that you can do this anywhere, with anything. What can I do to help you?

I've just done it... this week has been the hell on heart for me.
However... I'm going to read from the archives the discussion...

I'm sorry... If the distro itself it free, why do you expect to be paid to work on it? Most distro's thrive on volunteer's work.

thanks for all the applications i've received. glad to see you are interested to keep arch64 alive.

It's funny, I always thought of Pierre and Snowman as Arch developers anyway. Cool. More excellent talent.

I hate to say it here, but... It would have been nice if those who weren't selected would have gotten word of it .
Having to learn it from the main page seems kind of impersonal and ungrateful towards those who want to help out . I trust/hope at least the people who got selected got word of it before the announcement was posted.
And no, before the obvious comments arrive: I'm not disgruntled, I trust the devs picked the best candidates .

Good stuff! I'm glad to see Arch64 gaining more support and that Pierre and Snowman are now offical developers.

Great news So does this mean Arch64 is here to stay?
I'm glad we were able to sort things out.

I'ts been a few weeks since I checked the forums, I've been a developer for the past 8 years. Recently started playing with linux, main purpose to setup a mythtv pvr. I'm rebuilding my system now so I've been checking the Arch website and noticed this post.
Please let me know if you're still looking for someone.
PS: I have a dual processor motherboard with two AMD Operons and 1GB for ram. I'll probably will need to add some memory to the system and another hard drive since I'm running out of space.

Some open/free developers do get paid for their work/time. I think it's great that people volunteer for free to give back too though. I thought it might be a paid position given that it was labeled as a 'job' posting. I'm sure there is some income from the ads on the web-pages and the donation link on the main page. I have no idea how much is coming in from that though (perhaps it hardly even covers the cost of bandwidth).
I didn't mean to imply that the position ought to be paid... just wondering if it was. I would seriously consider volunteering for such a position if my personal finances were in a better state.
PS: I'd be willing to help-out with Arch64, but I don't think I can really allocate enough time to make a major contribution right now. If the devs are feeling a little overwhelmed, I'd be happy to offer a few hours when I can.

Is something changed in the way Arch64 is updated or it's still following the 32 bit tree releases?
Offline
we are still following ArchLinux (i686) but we will take the freedom to delay some updates where we know them as critical. Beyond that x86_64 packagers are now in a state where we can officially maintain packages for both architectures.
