After one of those updates I think it was in January or so my screen remained black during shutdown.
Unfortunately I have no idea anymore what was updated.
I have a notebook with Nvidia graphics card. I installed GDM, Gnome and Berly, but this problem does not seem to be related to them.

Hello again
So I have found a solution. The problem seems to be in the gdm rc.d script. In the /etc/rc.conf you have to disable the
gdm daemon script. Then open the /etc/inittab and change this line x:5:respawn: to x:5:respawn:/usr/sbin/gdm -nodaemon.
Now when you shutdown or rebooting your pc. You see the right vc.
Best Regards

Unfortunately that made no difference on my machine.

I tried the suggestions above without success.
I changed the VGA= entry in my menu.lst with any possible xorg.conf display combination.
Still no luck.
Any other ideas?

Found the solution:
I have a GeForce Go 6600 graphics card and should have installed nvidia-96xx instead of nvidia.
Everything fine now
