SB Live 5.1 doesn't have a functional master mixer - help?

I plugged in an SB live 5.1 into HTPC #2, and auto detect loaded all the modules right out the chute. Great!

Surround sound even worked. speaker-test -c 6 -D surround51 put noise on all of my speakers without issue.

Unfortunately, the PCM mixer controls the front two speakers... and so does the Master mixer. There is *no* mixer which controls all of the speakers. That sucks! I can't use it with mythtv/xine without a functional master mixer. Is there some goofy thing I can do with asoundrc / asound.conf to create a functional master mixer?

Also, if I were to go hacking around with the driver source, I'd have to go play with the kernel source, right? IIRC we're using the built-in ALSA drivers in the kernel...
