Changing download action in firefox impossible

Once upon a time, FF asked me what to do with PDF files (after I had klicked on a PDF link). I said, open it with evince, and do that every time. Now, I want FF to open a PDF in acroread instead, But the only way to achieve this is to download the PDF file (save link as...) and then open it with acroread. How can I change the filetype handling without deleting my complete .mozilla directory?

I tried "Edit"->"Preferences", Tab "Content", Section "File Types", Button "Manage...". A Window pops up with no entries.

I searched in "about:config" and resetted all the entries which seemed to be related to my problem. Nothing happened.

I searched the Mozilla knowledge base, but they only handle the windows version of FF, and their tips and hints don't work on Linux.

I have this Problem since years, and nobody knows how to solve it. Maybe nobody cares? Well, I do.

look inside your .mozilla directory for the file mimeTypes.rdf and just delete it, that will reset all of the default actions.

Well, not very elegant solution. Is there no smarter way than delete the entire file (ar alternatively editing it)? This is a very big disadvantage in Firefox...
