Petition: Windows software to Linux!

There is a petition going on now, if software makers should port their software to linux:

Bring Windows games and software to Linux. Now we have games out there that could be for Linux but hasn't been released for Linux. There is also title software like Quicken, Macromedia Shockwave, Flash, Finale, the list goes on forever. Now though there may be Open Source equivalents, why can't we have the same software. Let's speed up the evolution of Linux. If the same software for Windows appears on Linux, more people will use it and we can finally give Microsoft what it deserves. Show the software companies that we want more software and sign this petition.

I think porting their software to linux is a good thing, I prefer FOSS apps, but still:
1) More games for linux won't hurt
2) People won't be forced to use windows for their work if no FOSS app for the task/format exist yet
3) Choice is always a good thing

Oh yes, one online petition is going to get companies to recode their programs to work for the almighty Linux. This reminds me of how that image program somebody posted about was supposed to save the world and get all the businesses to instantly go to Linux.

I don't mean to be Mr. Downer, but I guess I'm the pessimistic member of this message board.

Re: Petition: Windows software to Linux!

*shrugs* I don't have much hope for it, but if you hand a site with the names of ten thousand potential customers to a company, they might take notice. The trick is to attract that many. No harm in signing it.

Of course, I'd never use closed software if there's an open source alternative (and mostly I wouldn't even if there wasn't an alternative) either. The key is that if this software is supported, more businesses may be willing to switch to Linux. More business interest in Linux means more business interested in paid open source development of Linux, which ultimately means more jobs for open source developers.

I signed the shockwave thing a long time ago.  I don't have any hopes for Sony, as far as games right now, though.  I was thinking of getting EverQuestII, but I think Sony is going to be on permenant boycott right now on every level of product they offer thanks to blatantly hacking people's computers with rootkit.

And lets not forget Sony ripping off Opensource code as well.

I'll have a look @ this partition, but I also prefer to use Opensource if there is an option

Re: Petition: Windows software to Linux!

I actually prefer competition - it accelerates software development.  If closed-source software is a better way to go than open-source, I'll use it.  I have no problem with software being available for Linux.  It's whether you use it or not.

I have no problem with closed-source software companies being more open-minded about their products.  Don't forget that a lot of people are in situations where they must use closed-source software in order to be productive, whether it be for themselves or for a group, and if there isn't a way to use their software on an open-source environment, it only promotes more use of closed-source operating systems.

Aye, competition would be good, might give a few open source projects a kick in the ass.

Though i dont hold much hope in that partition, I dont think they really hold much water.
