Arch Install, config problem!

Hello,

I am trying to install arch Linux for the first time. I geet through the install process until the point when you configure your computer. I make my changes then it goes to the point when it puts you into nano to edit the fallback.conf (black screen, green fonts). At the bottom, it has some differnent commands, like
^G -help and ^X -exit. I like the default configurations so i just want to save and exit. the problem is i have no idea how to exit and get back to the install screen.

Plz help!

Re: Arch Install, config problem!

To just save a file (if modified) and exit nano, the ^X refers to Ctrl+x. Hope you enjoy Arch!

Re: Arch Install, config problem!

after pressing CTRL X to exit the nano edit screen you will drop back to the command line, unless you made changes to the file opened.  In that case, press Y to confirm changes and then <ENTER> to save that same file name...or press N to deny any changes made and you'll be dropped back to the command line.

**This all coming from a Arch noob just slightly steps ahead of you with His install of Arch.  smile

Re: Arch Install, config problem!

OK i got passed that page, now when i comlete the installation and renoot the machine, it takes me to a terminal/command prompt (with username localhost or something similar). I have previously set up my root password, so i can type root and then the pw, and that is as far as I can get. Any help? what is the next step in this install process?

See http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Off … tall_Guide.

The Wiki has all kinds of great stuff to read over.

Re: Arch Install, config problem!

The wiki is really helpful. Probably the first thing to do is check that the install has left you with a working network. Try to ping the web (e.g. "ping -c1 www.google.com") to see if you are connected. If not, check /etc/rc.conf and /etc/resolv.conf to make sure your network settings are correct. If  the network settings are OK, update pacman ("pacman -Syu"). Then you probably want to install Xorg & gnome/kde etc. The wiki will help out with this. Good luck!
