Alsa works fine, but without microphone. My notebook have special port for second microphone. May be system some how use this line instead of first microphone. Any clue?

hi
I have dell notebook, sound is by sigmatel STAC9200, module snd-hda-intel. I had problems with mic, but eventually got it working by loading module with model=ref as option. This gave me more options in alsamixer. I also created .asoundrc like this
pcm.hda-intel {
type hw
card 0
}
ctl.hda-intel {
type hw
card 0
}
but don't know if this is important or not
anyway - it works.

I had the same problem. Try the solution in Wiki, though, its for Skype. Read section: "B. Making ALSA + dMix work for Skype"

Go to Mic and then press space.

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Thanks a lot for all yours help but... First of all I really do not understand what is go wrong. I have the Maestro sound card on my laptop and (may be) something which has the name chip Sigmatel STAC9721,23.I say 'may be', because, from one hand, I can't find any clue about this device on my laptop documentation from Dell site and, from other hand, I can see the name of that device on left top corner of alsamixer screen. So I decide to build-in both drivers directly into the kernel.I was trying to use all of your's advices and unfortunately the result was negative. I am not test the Skype installation recommendation from Wiki yet, because after upgrading pacman, I can't retrieve alsa-oss (and other packages) from any of the ftp arch sites. So I will try it later. I put the question about my problem on alsa bug tracker for now. https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa- … hp?id=3053

Each time before getting the mic to work, I have to run KMix (KDE sound mixer). Increase the volume of "Capture Mux (mic), activate Input/Capture and increase the volume, and activate Switches/IEC958.

If you go to alsamixer, and unmute the mic and put the volume up, does it do anything. Cause mine did, but I wasn't getting any capture. So since that was the case. I muted the mic, pressed tab, made sure that capture volume was up and pressed space on both capture and mic. Thus you have a "Capture R L" on both the mic and the capture.
