Hopefully someone will be able to shed some light on this for me..
Every time I try to play a video via mplayer or vlc, xorg dies

crash it again, and then post tail /var/log/Xorg.log (or the whole thing). copy the log somewhere before you start X again though, or you'll overwrite it.

sorry, just got back from work. I am gonna log into arch right now, crash the server and paste the whole log for your viewing pleasure.

does it make a difference if you use current/xf86-video-ati instead of testing/xf86-video-ati? please keep me up to date!

yea, just figured that out, I was not aware I was using the testing build, I downgraded to current and now its working.. can we all say "DUUUUUUUUR"?

i'm currently also updating xf86-video-ati in testing to 6.6.192. might be worth a shot too?

yea, Ill test it out when its updated btw, the other one in testing also had another side effect, when I left my session, the whole PC would lock up. odd..
