I've been using MacOSX primarily for the last 2 years but am finally coming back to Arch. I'm wanting to build a music server for my closet to store all my songs and use my laptop to play those songs (not stream them, but play them on the server itself which is connected to my stereo).
What's the latest greatest way to do this? In the past I'd used MPD but found that it would crash when there were too many songs in the queue. (I like to have all my songs in the queue and then set the playlist to random). I didn't have MPD backed by any sort of database so I suppose that could have been the issue.
In any case, before I go too far down any one path, has anyone walked this road before who can share some recommendations?

I use mpd and it never crashed on my system. I'd suggest to try it again.
Haven't been here in a while. Still rocking Arch.

Wow, lots of support for MPD. I liked it quite a bit but when I had 10k songs in the queue it really started to drag and even crash. Do you all use it straight-up or are there instructions anywhere for using it with MySQL?

hrmm never tried putting 10k songs in one playlist before
the only sql backends that ive heard of used with mpd are web based playlist / collection manager type tools i.e. http://ampache.org/
