Xorg problem - yet another newbie question

Hi,
I'm new to Archlinux and I'm having a problem with installing Xorg. I have a Radeon 9800 video card, nothing too special about the computer itself (Ubuntu installed without a hitch). I pacman-ed Xorg (and later xf86-video-ati and libgl-dri as per FAQ). I xorgconfig-ed and when I startx-ed I got the graphics screen (the X for mouse pointer) for a sec and then back to console without any obvious error message. I got the same problem from hwd -x and another xorg.conf I copied from Ubuntu. Here's my log (I trimmed it a little, it's too long to post):

Re: Xorg problem - yet another newbie question

Hi, is there any reason to use that driver? I used the fglrx driver and it worked instantly (I also have an ATI 9800). If it's not a good idea to use the fglrx driver I will stand corrected and change my config but at the moment it does everything I want.

Re: Xorg problem - yet another newbie question

In my humble experience, fglrx and beryl don't mix too well. I managed the installation and beryl now work wonderfully.

Re: Xorg problem - yet another newbie question

I've had no problems at all with the combination of fglrx and beryl. I have read in a lot of other posts that there are indeed issues. I'm going to test the speed difference between the radeon driver and the fglrx driver tonight.
[edit:] According to http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI … ver:_Fglrx, the fglrx driver is faster so I'll keep it.
