Re: Xfce4 problem still exists

try logging in as a new user and see if that works. also make sure the "allow xfce4 to manage the desktop" option is being saved. to do that, select it, then log out and check the "save sessions" box. when you log back in, it should be saved.

Re: Xfce4 problem still exists

I don't see a need to move away from Xfce ...
1) Did you install a Login-Manager? (such as xdm or slim)
2) Did you add the Login-Manager to your Deamons arry in "etc/rc.conf"?
3) Did you chck out the Wiki for "Login-Manager"?
4) If all of this doesn't work, did you try to to add the following line to your "/xinitrc" - "exec startxfce4"?

Re: Xfce4 problem still exists

Check that xfwm4 is running. If it dies, and you log out and save the session, it won't come back the next time. If it's not running, just start it in a terminal, and then log out, saving the session again. If this happens a lot, you might want to put "xfwm4 &" in your .xinitrc above the startxfce4.

Re: Xfce4 problem still exists

Now xfce4 is working fine but its taking a longer time to start.

I have the following entries in my:
.xinitrc

#!/bin/sh

#
# ~/.xinitrc
#
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
#

exec wmaker
# exec startkde
# exec icewm
# exec blackbox
# exec fluxbox

xfwm4 &
xfdesktop &
startxfce4

edit:Xfce4 has started giving me the same problem again after first reboot after making the changes.

Re: Xfce4 problem still exists

I had the same (blank screen) problem with a fresh xfce, creating a new user account solved this.
The problematic account had tons of kde configuration files in its dir, might have something to do with it.
btw, in .xinitrc you only need: exec xfce4-session

Re: Xfce4 problem still exists

Were you sure to remove "exec wmaker" from your .xinitrc, that shouldn't be there. I only have "exec startxfce4" in mine.

Re: Xfce4 problem still exists

it should work with a new user, as long as you made a new home directory and only had exec startxfce4 in the ~/.xinitrc.

no one can really tell you what desktop you should use, it's really a matter of personal choice. aske 10 different people and you'll get 20 different answers. wink you could try one of the fluxbox/blackbox/openbox WMs, icewm, windowmaker, or even full blown KDE or Gnome. there are lots to choose from, you'll just have to experiment to find what suits you best.

but xfce4 should work, so don't give up on that yet. make sure it's a totally new user with clean home directory and only "exec startxfce4" in the ~/.xinitrc without any of that other stuff (or start it from the command line with startxfce4).

Re: Xfce4 problem still exists

You can start Xfce by placing something like this in your ~/.xinitrc file:

#!/bin/sh
exec startxfce4

That's enough. I don't see the sense of those xfwm4 and xfdesktop lines there. startxfce4 automatically starts those. And remove the exec wmaker also. You're not running WindowMaker, but Xfce.
You can also fire up Xfce by simply typing startxfce4 on the command line. It will start the X server automatically, without the use of a ~/.xinitrc. Good luck !
