[2007-05-18 19:10] upgraded xorg-xinit (1.0.3-1 -> 1.0.3-2)

Now, the following things broke:

1) cannot start gdm, it says if failed to start the greeter application
if I do startx, it says it couldn't write to .ICEauthority and refuses to start gnome
for now I have installed fluxbox and run all my gnome apps from it but this is not a solution

2) networkmanager doesn't find any network device; note that I blacklisted it in pacman because of a bug in version 0.6.5 that I already posted in the bug-tracker, so the reason of this error might be due to some package other than networkmanager itself
however, I can do dhclient as root and get at least my ethernet cable connection up and running

3) sound mixing doesn't work anymore (I noticed this before the reboot that broke everything)
If there's rhytmbox started (also if not playing), totem can't play anything and complains about the sound resources being busy or not available

4) (this is my fault)
since I know pacman 3 messed up something with permissions in packages, and I couldn't start things like fluxbox because it couldn't write files in my home, I just chmodded all my files to 777 to have the apps working
now, after all these problems get (hopefully) solved, I would like to restore sane permissions on my files in the home
what should I do?

Note: Donwgrading esd, xorg-xinit and udev didn't fix any of these problems.

I'm not a newbie at all but these are major problems that prevent me to work well with my laptop.

Thanks in advance

P.S.: I'm already backing up my home as I'm (sadly) considering switching to Ubuntu if these problems don't get  solved. I hope I won't have to do so.

Re: [HELP] Last upgrade broke almost everything

For the network problem, post your /etc/rc.conf here.

To fix your files, I would do something like:

chown -R <youruser>:<yourgroup> <yourhomedir>
find <yourhomedir> -type d -exec chmod 700 {} \;
find <yourhomedir> -type f -exec chmod 600 {} \;

If any files want more permissions you'll have to set them afterwards yourself.

Your problem #1 (and maybe others) sound like they are caused by having your home directory and/or some files in it not owned by you, so check that out.

Re: [HELP] Last upgrade broke almost everything

The problem appeared before my manual change of permissions, that I did in order to make things work again (fluxbox at least).
Anyway I'll try tinkering with permissions, but this is obviously pacman upgrade's fault since everything worked fine before updating.

EDIT:
Did it but no luck.
Still stuck with fluxbox.
Gnome session, gdm, networkmanager not working.

Re: [HELP] Last upgrade broke almost everything

Downgrading gtk2 to previous version now lets me start a gnome session with startx.
All the other problems (gdm failing due to greeter error, networkmanager saying "no network devices have been found", totem saying there is no audio output available when rhythmbox is open) still remain.

EDIT:
problems also with dbus, it doesn't mount external disks automatically when plugged in, but requires mounting from the nautilus->computer window

You're having a horrible time of it, aren't you?

Check the permissions on /tmp also, pacman goofed those up for some people. Should be 1777 (drwxrwxrwt).

Yes I am neutral
Just gone out to drink something on it...

Anyway, I already chmodded /tmp to 1777, for that matter

Re: [HELP] Last upgrade broke almost everything

Update:

For the networkmanager problem, I also tried to use arch stock kernel with its own madwifi instead of -ck, but that didn't help, so it might be a problem due to permissions or configuration.

Regarding gdm, I tried switching to a plain login window instead of themed, disabling accessible login and also downgrading gdm but that didn't solve the problem.

Men, how bad was this pacman update..

Re: [HELP] Last upgrade broke almost everything

Yes, some of the things broke down. But it was not so bad smile - I didn't need to downgrade gtk and I got gdm and some other apps back to normal after deleting some config files (mostly gmone and gtk related) in /root and my ~/  (/.config/  ~/.gnome  etc.)
Also, previous pacman disasters tought me:
1. to Start applications from console and analyze errors which can lead to:
2. to Browse and Check related file permissions and ownership as the cure No2  after upgrades.
3. to Edit related configs.
4. to Delete related configs (this is also the case if I lose my patience... smile ).

P.S. And btw, would it be good if arch had a script: "fix-file-permissions" (like in OSX?). Does arch has a global policy/guides regarding its file permissions?

I renamed all relevant configuration files in my home but unfortunately this didn't do the trick.

Try to see if you are in the right groups in /etc/group ... If nothing works, try to create a new user and try everything again.

If you mean gdm chooser/greeter problem,  then that was easy to me (I don't use Arch64 but it should be the same problem):
1. started kdm (it's always useful to have an alternative..- you can try slim DM or start gnome-session from startx)
2 logged into gnome
3. opened gdm config with a favourite editor ("Adie" because it informs if the opened file has changed)
4.then changed/reapplied things in gnome control centre "Login window" while watching gdm config
5. started from terminal:
$gdm stop
$gdm start
...it said another screen :1, then alt+F8 or up to F12...

Btw,  after this disaster, I discovered that having running to desktops in parallel they are faster... strange...

P.S. But mplaeyer still kills my all my desktops with a black screen...

Edit: new user will not normally help gdm because its configs are stored system-wide /etc... or /opt/gnome... or usr/share/...

Re: [HELP] Last upgrade broke almost everything

I'm sorry, but I already fixed all these problems by switching to Ubuntu 32bit, one of the most supported Linux platforms I guess.
I'll miss Arch64's speed and simplicity, but I don't have time to reinstall/reconfigure my os each time that something goes wrong.
Thanks anyway for your help.

Last thing I'd like to say: in my opinion Arch Linux is losing its technical superiority by releasing such painful package upgrades.
I still believe Arch's underneath structure is the best, but the quality of packages these days is falling down very rapidly.
Maybe it's just me, but you know.. I'm an experienced Linux user but I gave up since I can't trust a distro that breaks my system so often, no matter if sometimes this is due to trivial things like config files or permissions or what else.
Earlier I found Arch to be different from Gentoo because distributing binary packages implies a minimum amount of testing but perhaps I was wrong.

Maybe I'll come back to Arch one day.
Goodbye and good luck!
