subversion repo for important/fiddly config files

Not that i've had to (or wanted to) since i've been using arch but everytime i reinstall any distro i find it slightly annoying that i have to reconfigure everything to get my system back to the way i like it. This isn't cosmetic changes, but rather the fiddly things like httpd.conf, /etc/profile, /etc/vimrc, /etc/bashrc, /etc/hosts* etc.

I remember reading a post in this forum about putting these files in a subversion repo so you can easily get a working copy back again in case your system goes to shit - any thoughts on this setup? Has anyone done this and/or have any tips or traps to be aware of? Any dangers of checking out files directly to / ?

Re: subversion repo for important/fiddly config files

I should do something like that aswell. Using SVN for it seems like a splendid idea! I don't really see the danger if you check out your repo to / right after the installation. You won't loose much work if you screw things up. It's probably different with production servers that have been running for years.

Re: subversion repo for important/fiddly config files

thanks guys, i've given it a try but i can't seem to import files into the repo in full path. From the root dir and as root i've tried to svn add etc/httpd/conf, which works but when i look at the repo setup it has omitted the etc/httpd and just committed the conf dir... before i get stuck into google or the man pages about this does anyone know it off hand?
