Arch rocks!

I'm a long-time linux user, and since about 1998, I've bounced from distro to distro, with exceptionally long stints with Gentoo and most recently Ubuntu. While I think that Ubuntu is a great distro for popularizing Linux, I also got tired of it being kind of slow, even in the 64-bit version. It also seemed to consume a lot of memory out-of-box. I've never really felt "at home" in any distro I used.

So, having read some good things about Arch, I threw an extra drive I had laying around in my machine and decided to dual-boot Arch64 with Ubuntu. Well, that was a few days ago, and since then, I've not booted back into Ubuntu. I just mounted my home partition from Ubuntu in Arch, and now I'm crankin' away, happier than the proverbial porcine in the muck. This distro feels like home already. It just feels "right" in the way that no other distro has so far. I really love pacman and the whole Arch philosophy, and I love the speed. Arch64 flies on my machine, and by orders of magnitude over Ubuntu. It is really noticeable, and I'm something of a speed demon, so it hits a really sweet spot for me. Plus, I don't have a million automatically-installed daemons running in the background, like with Ubuntu.

Anyway, thanks to all of you -- these forums have been very helpful as I've configured things and set up my perfect fluxbox environment. I really look forward to learning more from you all, and contributing what I can.

Re: Arch rocks!

I did try ubuntu in 2005. it was ver 5.04 and it was extremely slow. No idea why but ArchLinux's gnome has always been faster than anything I have ever used although I have a lot of daemons running at boot and a lot of stuff in the background.

Also coming from Ubuntu, I have the exact same sentiments.

Re: Arch rocks!

I'm also a long time Linux user and since 1998 I've felt at home with the likes of Slackware, Debian, Gentoo, all BSDs flavors among others. Fortunately back in late 2003 I've found Archlinux which has been my de facto distro ever since. That's the most accurate representation of my dream distro, no more no less. Thus I won't look no further in the near future, I'll stick with it and give back all my support to this great community.

Re: Arch rocks!

Duke works fine on my T30 but still fiddling with wireless.
Now - Just installed Duke on my dream box Core2 duo - Sata - Nvidia - everything works but fiddling with setting up my Canon scanner now.
I love it after 2 years trying all sorts of other distros.  Gnome is my  desktop
:-))
