Although you provide zero information about your problem I will try to give some generic answers.
First have a look at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Alsa - Are you positive that you did everything that stands there? If not: well, read the fine Wiki / Manual. Also, are you part of the Audio Group? What Audio-Apps have you tested.
Also have a look at http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html so that you don't embarrass yourself on those Forum.
Todays mistakes are tomorrows catastrophes.

Pidgin seems kind of finicky when it comes to sound and I think it has something to do with the module used for the sound card. For example: My NVIDIA card desktop (which uses the hda-intel module) cant seem to make pidgin sound work with the same settings as my ATI card laptop (uses snd-atiixp *or something like that*) which can make pidgin play sound. I have yet to find out what makes the difference besides the modules considering the same packages are installed. So it might just be that pidgin doesn't support the module you use. Just as a note in case you have one NVIDIA cards used to use the intel8x0 and sound seems to be more difficult in general with NVIDIA cards.

Well, if you can hear sounds, but not in pidgin, try changing method from "automatic" to "command" on pidgins sound-tab, and then set the command to "aplay %s" (without quotes), that has helped me before. (aplay is provided by alsa-utils, just like alsamixer).
