its only partly broken, if you use special functions.

Re: 2007.05 Duke ISOs released, installation feedback

I found bug in the setup.
If I choose to following layout
/dev/sda1 /boot
/dev/sda8 /
/dev/sda9 swap

When I set the /dev/sda1 don't clean the disk.
Then, when I enter the adjust config file (eg. rc.conf,...).  The config files would be empty.

So, that force me must to backup my original /dev/sda1 which also contains my other linux boot files. And I should choose overwrite my /dev/sda1

There is another strange situation, I successful install my ArchLinux yesterday, then I turn off my machine (AMD Opteron 2.4G Mhz, 8G RAM). x86_64, I just do pacman -Syu in yesterday.

But, in this morning, it automatic reboot.

My archlinux automatic reboot on
Mounting Local Filesystems

I tried to boot by the cdrom, but sometimes even the cdrom can't boot.
It automatic reboot on

NTFS volume version 3.1
NTFS-fs error (device sda5): load_system_files(): Volume is dirty, Mounting read-only. Run chkdsk and mount in Windows.

I guess the boot cdrom is depend on ntfs,  I boot with windows, and check the ntfs file system by windows, the file system seems OK.

Running 4 ArchLinux including sh4twbox,server,notebook,desktop. my AUR packages

Re: 2007.05 Duke ISOs released, installation feedback

i'm experiencing lots of problems to install Duke...

- stuck when recognizing my wireless card at beggining of instalation. solved with acpi=off, but i never had to do this before when installing past releases on my machine...
- after upgrade to pacman 3, there's a error/warning about my locale.
- after my first try the system hangs after im logged about between 1 or 3 minutes, without X. the system copletely frezzes. an keep hanging when i reboot and log.
- after my second instalation, everething seems fine, i instal xorg, gnome, ati drivers, but when i reboot, when the modules are loading, there's an error that crash the system, and by what i can see in console is something related with acpi, but could be more things because the console is full of error messages.
- now that error massages are print in a kind of infinite loop...

realy, i use arch since 0.7 and i never experiencing so many problems with instalation... with other versions everything had worked 100%.

i tried also re-instal 0.8, but after the upgrade the errors continue...
could be something related with the new kernel?!

Re: 2007.05 Duke ISOs released, installation feedback

It would be great if tpowa could release a newer/fixed install iso (just ftp size?) with kernel 2.6.21.2, fixed pacman and other base packages - duke.2 perhaps? big_smile

Yes, this is done intentionally.
It was removed because it is useless with rolling release system, but then added back as empty just for compatability with software that checks for its existance to know its running on Arch.

I think /etc/arch-release should be filled in, it's just an easy way to know which release you're running...
Even if such an information is, ok, somewhat useless, it can be interesting sometimes, and it doesn't hurt...
IYHO, does it make more sense to display arch release in /etc/issue ?

With rolling release system it is not correct to say "I'm running XXX release".
That caused confusion in past, especially among newbies.

Duke is dispayed in /etc/issue just for fun, and only with that reason in mind. smile

Why it was not in /etc/arch-release too? - because /etc/issue is displayed on boot, while barely someone reads /etc/arch-release. smile

Re: 2007.05 Duke ISOs released, installation feedback

/etc/issue is the standard file for distro specific version information and like Romashka said, it is displayed on boot. Deviating from this standard would make us commies and we are not commies.

Re: 2007.05 Duke ISOs released, installation feedback

I have no problems with the other 2007.05 release with the same disk image.

I test this release with InnoTek VirtualBox in a disk image on 2.99 gb space.

Again, no problems with the other release of 2007.05.

Linuxtag2007 install:
When using DHCP during installation, and accepting network setup... after reboot in /etc/rc.conf it shows
eth0="eth0  netmask  broadcast "
(blank addresses)

eth0="dhcp"

@ quad3d@work: even though i dont use dhcp thats what the above shows..

a question just out of curiosity..do the linuxtag isos have any special features that arent available in Duke and wont be available in the next iso? besides bugfixes i mean. features that were added for convinience reasons maybe

Re: 2007.05 Duke ISOs released, installation feedback

I haven't used the Duke iso but I don't know if this is changed since 0.7.1:

The set mountpoints utility is lacking. Notably, you can't see what you've already set, and I for one can't remember very well.
A display of the partition name, partition size (helps remind the user which one is which, I think) and selected mountpoint would be much more helpful.

Torrents are already up and seeded.
Metalink packages will be prepared soon.

Updated metalinks are at http://www.metalinker.org/samples.html#arch

There's also DownThemAll, a Firefox extension that supports metalinks in their nightly builds but it's not super stable yet. the icon/logo, description, publisher, license, OS/arch, & other info are taken from the metalink.

Re: 2007.05 Duke ISOs released, installation feedback

since a new iso is close, along with the new kernel version, just a note that for some reason the linuxtag iso doesnt generate (at least utf8) locale as it should. hope new isos dont have that as duke didnt also.

Re: 2007.05 Duke ISOs released, installation feedback

There seems to be quite a nasty problem for those who have NVIDIA cards (at least I experienced this problem during my install of Duke). udev loads the nvidiafb module, but if that module is loaded, nvidia drivers won't install correctly. Therefore I had to backlist the nvidiafb module. Anyone got the same problem? Also, at my first setup, I chose all my partitions to be xfs and installer just hang at the end (after setting my root password).
