And after reading some mailing lists and docs I'm not sure if you have to compile the newest release or the cvs version to get rid of this error. Check this out:

Oh, I almost forgot. If everything above will fail you can try digikam which is much better than gtkam IMO (Yes i know it's for kde but if this is so important for you...)

Great. Don't forget to install digikamplugins if you want to play with downloaded photoes - it's quite cool. I'm not sure if all the dependencies are included in digikam plugins already so check: http://digikam.sourceforge.net/plugins.html for full description.
