Somehow weird kernel26ck update policy

Good evening,

after having updated kernel26ck today, I must say, that I have some criticism left over towards the release policy of this package. It's great that the arch devs put effort in providing us with the newest kernel technology (with good patches applied), but it turns to being useless, if some things are left out.

What I am referring to is the fact that those packages weren't updated which work together with kernel26ck - for instance nvidia-ck, tiacx-ck and so on.

Wouldn't it be better to announce the ready-to-be-used kernel internally and then update all relevant packages before actually updating the repository version? Concerning kernel update this could avoid a lot of hassle for quite a lot of users which have no idea why - for instance - X is not working anymore without having X packages being affected by the last update.

I hope this can be done soon - I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks for the attention

~cg

Uhm.. i see nvidia-ck in [extra], but no tiacx-ck.

Re: Somehow weird kernel26ck update policy

In fact there is a nvidia-ck package, yes. But it's not working together with the 2.6.21 release of kernel26ck - tested here, at least.

I refer to the experiences I made yesterday.

Re: Somehow weird kernel26ck update policy

I uploaded kernel26ck and all related successfully-built module packages to the extra repo in one operation three days ago. I encountered an error with the nvidia package upload, which I'm confident I rectified, as CVS, website, FTP, and my local build logs all agree that nvidia-ck 1.0.9755-1 is the correct package. Please advise if that is the version you have, and if so, post the file list for it, as given by your system. Please also confirm that your kernel26ck package version is 2.6.21.ck2-1.

Regarding tiacx, this currently does not build successfully against 2.6.21 kernels, and you will notice that it has consequently not been updated for kernel26 or kernel26suspend2 either. I intend to have another look at this, and as the packages are flagged out-of-date, iphitus, who maintains tiacx, will also be aware of the difficulty. tiacx is in our unstable repo, and we do not delay updates to current or extra for the sake of unstable packages. If this package is important for you, I'd suggest downgrading to the previous kernel version until a solution is found.

Re: Somehow weird kernel26ck update policy

I can only say that neither the network nor X started with 2.6.21.ck2-1. tiacx is essential for me, so I sticked to the 'old' kernel version (2.6.20-7).

I thought that it had to do with the nvidia package that X did not start. I'll have a look at it, when I'm back home end add it here.

// edit

[root@celestary chaosgeisterchen]# pacman -Qs nvidia-ck
local/nvidia-ck 1.0.9755-1
    NVIDIA drivers for kernel26ck.

Re: Somehow weird kernel26ck update policy

I'm having the same problem as chaosgeisterchen.

# pacman -Qs kernel26ck
local/kernel26ck 2.6.21.ck2-1

# pacman -Qs nvidia-ck
local/nvidia-ck 1.0.9755-1
    NVIDIA drivers for kernel26ck.

Re: Somehow weird kernel26ck update policy

Please post pacman -Ql nvidia-ck, and also any nvidia-related messages from dmesg after you try to start X.

Re: Somehow weird kernel26ck update policy

Re tiacx - my apologies, I confused it with another module package. tiacx-ck 20070101-2 is now in unstable, for use with kernel26ck 2.6.21.ck2-1.

Re: Somehow weird kernel26ck update policy

% pacman -Ql nvidia-ck
nvidia-ck /lib/modules/2.6.20-ck/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko
% pacman -Qs kernel26ck
local/kernel26ck 2.6.21.ck2-1
The Linux Kernel and modules, compiled with the -ck patchset for improved
    system responsiveness and interactivity

I'm having the same issue with ck.  ^ is the file list for nvidia-ck and the version of the ck kernel; it seems the driver is a point point release behind the kernel.

Re: Somehow weird kernel26ck update policy

sickhate - you've already posted that in another thread, which is where it belongs. No need to add it here.

YithianHistorian - can you confirm that your nvidia package is nvidia-ck 1.0.9755-1 ?

Re: Somehow weird kernel26ck update policy

I have now uploaded nvidia-ck 1.0.9755-2 to the repos. This is identical to 1.0.9755-1, except for the pkgrel, so pacman will see it as an upgrade and act accordingly.

I am still unsure about the cause of this problem - possibly a system glitch, alternatively an error on my part. Either way, apologies for the inconvenience.

I would be grateful if any or all of you could post with your results as soon as this hits your preferred mirror.

Re: Somehow weird kernel26ck update policy

[root@celestary chaosgeisterchen]# pacman -Ql nvidia-ck
nvidia-ck /lib/modules/2.6.21-ck/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko

Should now work perfectly. Thanks a lot, tomk.
