Okay, I've set my xorg.conf up as per the Arch wiki. My InputDevice section looks like this:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Touchpad"
Driver "synaptics"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mouse0"
Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
Option "LeftEdge" "1700"
Option "RightEdge" "5300"
Option "TopEdge" "1700"
Option "BottomEdge" "4200"
Option "FingerLow" "25"
Option "FingerHigh" "30"
Option "MaxTapTime" "180"
Option "MaxTapMove" "220"
Option "VertScrollDelta" "100"
Option "MinSpeed" "0.06"
Option "MaxSpeed" "0.12"
Option "AccelFactor" "0.0010"
Option "SHMConfig" "on"
EndSection
And I've got
Load "synaptics"
in the config file too, though I don't think it's actually necessary right now. But the touchpad doesn't do anything. Moving my finger across it doesn't move the mouse, clicking the buttons doesn't perform the associated actions, etc. When I first started X on this machine, it worked for about five seconds, then it simply stopped working and I haven't been able to get it working since.
/proc/bus/input/devices tells me that the touchpad has handlers mouse1, event7, and ts1.
When I use the auto-dev protocol as above, cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -i touchpad gets me this:
{**) |-->Input Device "Touchpad"
(II) Synaptics touchpad driver version 0.14.6 (1406)
(--) Touchpad auto-dev sets device to /dev/input/event7
(--) Touchpad touchpad found
(**) Touchpad: always reports core events
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Touchpad" (type: MOUSE)
(--) Touchpad auto-dev sets device to /dev/input/event7
(--) Touchpad touchpad found
Looks fine, but as I said, no input. So I tried the event and psaux protocols, and got this both times when I grepped through Xorg.0.log:
(**) |-->Input Device "Touchpad"
(II) Synaptics touchpad driver version 0.14.6 (1406)
(EE) Touchpad no synaptics touchpad detected and no repeater device
(EE) Touchpad Unable to query/initialize Synaptics hardware.
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "Touchpad"
But what really scares the bejesus out of me is that, when I tried looking at the output of everything in /dev/input (using cat as recommended on the Gentoo wiki), *nothing* responded when I manipulated the touchpad. Not mouse1, not event7, not ts1, not any of the entries in /dev/input/by-path, not anything at all.
Is there some kernel module for a SynPS/2 touchpad that I need (got both evdev and psmouse loaded), or is it possible that, only two days after I recieved it, my laptop's hardware is already starting to fail?
Edit: Shit, apparently there's a shortcut that disables the touchpad which I must have accidentally hit. Now working. Please disregard this post.
