I installed dbus and hal, and I put myself into storage and optical (I didn't put myself into dbus and hal - seems to make no difference). I'm using thunar-volman
CDs work fine (icon shows up and thunar opens with the CD's contents).
My USB key doesn't work. I checked under /dev and there was no additional /dev/sdb (/dev/sda is my hard drive). I don't even get a DBus error. So I cannot mount my USB key manually.
I tried plugging in a USB mouse to check my USB controller, and it is working as expected.
I recently reinstalled Arch (yesterday) and before the newer versions of the packages (since April 30) everything was working fine.
Many thanks in advance.

Does it show anything in dmesg when you plug in the usb key?

Sorry forgot to mention that (knew I forgot something). No dmesg doesn't show anything when I plug in the USB key.

No, I haven't tried AutoFS. I managed to get it working without it until I reinstalled Arch. I don't even get flashing LEDs.
I'm going to check out my USB key later today on some other machines to see if it is still functional. Either way, I'm worried since I am not getting anything under /dev or dmesg.

im all new to linux, but maybe this can help anyways, its worth a try atleast.
i think you have to be in the group tty to get usb drives to function. i read about it while installing arch some days ago.

Just as an additional data point, I'm also using Thunar-volman and my USB drives automount just fine (even the weird ones with Apple partition maps and HFS+ filesystems).
So it's not something basic that's broken.

How do I fixed my problem.
I used the HowTo for Hal
