oddly,, I have that problem every time I try to boot my thinkpad laptop with the wireless radio disabled.
If I switch it on until I boot, then switch it off..I am good to go. No idea why.
Sometimes it boots just fine with the radio off too.
Definitely nutty.

I experienced a similar (?) somewhat intermittent issue that seemed to be due, as with cactus, to having the killswitch of my wireless (ipw3945) enabled during boot. Ever since 2.6.20, however, the issue seems to have resolved itself.
