Openbox slow redrawing

I have a feeling that I missed something in my openbox setup, I switched to openbox from gnome and it seems like every application redraws it's contents a lot slower than it used to do with gnome and this behavior makes my desktop seem really, really sluggy...
If I for instance give thunderbird focus, I can see every pane being redrawn one by one and same goes for every GUI. Apps like amarok also seem to behave a lot slower compared to gnome when browsing the collection or queuing tracks.
I really like openbox so I hope someone has an insight in why this happens.

I'm running openbox natively with pypanel, my system specs:
Arch 0.8 fully up to date;
ati radeon x600 with fglrx;
amd athlon 3700+ with powernowd enabled;
regular kernel26.

I know it's late, but I can reproduce the same behavior on my installation, but only when running on XGL. On plain xorg everything works well.

Another thing I can see is that in Openbox the QT applications' fonts look much better than GTK. They look much smoother.

It's still the same with the new openbox from a few days ago and I have no clue on how to do something about it...
It might be due to Xorg though, which runs two processes instead of one with the fglrx driver, both eating the same amount of memory but only one using cpu...
I haven't had the time to compare the performance in openbox with other WM's (due to no other one installed ATM and the need to study for my coming exams...) but I will do in time (in a month or so, after the exams:p).
I kind of hope someone comes by with a solution in the mean time though, I hate watching urxvt being redrawn line by line...
