I used hwd -xa to generate this file

You don't have all those font dirs (which doesn't matter), two keyboard options with no proper values defined and your gfx card driver outputs some harmless warnings.
So, what's the problem?

startx starts the X server then it shutsdown with the following message
[FVWM][FlocaleLoadFont]: WARNING -- can't load font '-adobe-times-bold-r-*-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-*-*', trying default: -x-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed-x-13-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-,-*-fixed-medium-r-normal-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-*-*,-*-*-medium-r-normal-*-16-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
waiting for X server to shut down X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr"share/fonts/misc:unscaled" refocunt is 2, should be 1; fixing.
X10: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

Just to be on the safe side in terms of fonts: pacman -S xorg-fonts-misc xorg-fonts-100dpi ghostscript ttf-ms-fonts

I am still getting the same error

(WW) `fonts.dir' not found (or not valid) in "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi".
X server can`t use fonts without fontdirs, so for each directory in /usr/share/fonts (especially misc, 100dpi and cyrillic) go to that directory and run "mkfontdir `pwd`" there.

Thank you very much for that tip my errors have gone down dramatically and X is actually loading properly now.

It's weird that the fonts.dir files ware missing. They're supposed to be created automatically.
