When I installed the proprietary ATI drivers, I cannot use Openoffice with SCIM. When I use the open source driver, it works well however. Are there any work-arounds for this issue so that I may use Openoffice + Scim?

I don't think OO works with SCIM.
Is this thread of any help?

Scim worked with Openoffice before I installed the fglrx drivers

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … +bug/42015 -- seems to be a known issue with proprietary apps linking against libstdc++5 - unfortunately I don't know much about SCIM and don't know what scim-bridge is; I found this site by googling.

I tried to download and install scim-bridge from sourceforge, but I had problems compiling it.

See this bugthread about the issue..

There is talk about calling the application with the environment variable GTK_IM_MODULE set to "xim" as a workaround.

I tried using this method, and it works on my previous ubuntu install, but when I try this with my Arch install, nothing happens.
However, i did it a bit differently. One post in this article stated that I should "(/usr/bin/ooffice) - just add "GTK_IM_MODULE=xim " in front of the last line. "
However, i couldn't find the file /usr/bin/ooffice. So i modified the file /opt/var/program/soffice with the above variable.
still no dice. Openoffice opens but there is no scim IM.
I can set the variable to GCIN, and use GCIN instead of SCIM. However, I prefer SCIM over GCIN for Chinese input.
