Does gnome-power-manager shutdown work ?

I have a laptop computer. When it runs out of battery, normally (according to my settings in gnome-power-manager) the computer must be shutdown. But nothing happens and when the battery power is over, it suddenly stops without logging out or closing services.. It just cuts the power.. How can I make it work ? Any ideas ?
