Isn't 280 too high? I think the maximum keycode is 255.

It is too high, you can view all of the keycodes with xmodmap -pke, and you don't need sudo to run setkeycodes or xmodmap

One more advice: xorg keycodes are usually different from kernel keycodes. First, you have to set some kernel keycode to the scancode and then kernel keycode to some xorg symbol (or not if you don't need it because after assigning kernel keycode the button should work in xorg - check it with xev).
