New to archlinux , need help starting up kdemod

Hello everyone,

                   Im new to this distro and I come from Ubuntu community. I been using Linux for 2 months now and I completely switched from gaydoze <- lol. Anyways to the problem .. I installed the Archlinux Duke ( the new 1 at the time of post ). Looked around and fixed my internet by editing /etc/rc.conf , then I pacman -Suy kdemod and installed the kdemod packages ( w/e it required ). After that I restarted computer to find out that I only ended up back in the terminal screen sad. So I tried a few basic commands, startx , guix but none of these worked. So I started debugging some of the files and saw a 'loadexec=kdestart' in the kde.desktop located /etc/X11/sessions/. its either kdestart or startkde. I typed this and I saw like it was trying to start it up but it didn't. How can I start up my kde ?

echo 'exec kdestart'>.xinitrc&&xinit. Although you might aswell /etc/rc.d/kdm start as root, all that assuming you configured org first (bacause, you see, you don't get visual bling-bling in linux without starting xorg)

@Phrodo actually it's strtkde not kdestart..

first, you need to configure xorg it's not hard to do, i rcomend starting with X -configure, and then adjusting /etc/X11/xorg.conf to your hardware, once that is done you can type startx, startx executes whatever is set up at ~/.xinitrc  so you need to make sure that the line exec startkde is uncommented (actually, the exec is not needed.)

*    ~=/home/your_user

idk how to configure xorg since ubuntu auto-detected. i did download xorg and when i start kdm it just keeps blinking. i can see kde in the bg.

Alright i finally got it to work. I did 

pacman -S nvidia

and it installed the drivers. Then I 

X -configure

and I also

cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf

That worked and im on KDE atm. How do I make it go on kde automatically? xinitrc or rc.conf?

I had problems with the Duke ISO and xorg/kdemod/[...]. But I fixed my problem with:

#chmod 1777 /tmp

Add 'kdm' to the end of your DAEMONS array in rc.conf.

Why not use hwd for Xorg configuration, as it seem (per wiki) the recommended way:

pacman -S hwd

and

hwd -xa

. Now make sure you write "nvidia" instead of vesa and that you fill in the keyboard layout and then you should be able to access X.

do you mind explaining whats the difference between hwd and x -configure ? I downloaded/install hwd and did what you told me to do and it works. The x -configure works also. Here is what i got for hwd .. only changed 2 things added the vesa -> nvidia and added 1280x1024 resolution is this correct ?

hwd -xa is much more streamlined. It will autodetect everything (quite well) and write the file for you, without prompting you every step of the way, unlike x-configure. I believe it also generates ~/.xinitrc
Actually, if you're using the nvidia driver, you might also use

nvidia-xconfig

Which works pefectly for me. It also generates a much smaller, leaner xorg.conf without so much "spam".
