Problem copying large files

Having some problem copying large files (iso's) to my portable hard drive.
Gets to about 75  % then i get I/O error and cant copy the rest, happens on alot of different files?
Any ideas?

checked it an its all ok
more looking into it it seems it is the source drive i am copying from.

how big? DVD isos?

I was trying to download one the other day, and as my regular user wget stopped at something like 2gb and refused to make a file any bigger. Yet as root, wget continued happily, so I seemed to be having some sort of permission problem. Google seemed to say that it may be related to ulimit, but I didn't bother working it out.

from 700 meg ISO up to 4 gig DVD same problem?
