I was looking for a music player with the following features.
1. Lightweight.
2. Quick keyboard controls.
3. Music management (organize music based on id3 tags and folders)
4. Edit id3 tags in baches and one-by-one.
5. Rating of songs.
Other features that will be appreciated but not necessary are:
1. Ability to change music format.
2. Rip music from cd.
I tried the following:
1. xmms + madman. I dont like the way madman opens xmms separately and poor integration of these 2.
2. mpd + client. I tried few clients like sonata, gmpc and gmpc works best for me, but again i cannot edit id3 tags.
3. xmms2 +client. I havent found a good client for it.
Whats the best in ur opinion.
Also please suggest a client for mpd and xmms2 that have the above features.

I was going to suggest mpd + gmpc but you already discarded it; I don't know any other really lightweight options, using mpd+gmpc and easytag for tag editing maybe?
To get something done, a committee should consist of no more than three persons, two of them absent.

i think that you need to install some aditional packages but i forgot which .

I don't think you can in sonata... but the gimmix MPD client can.
edit: I take that back, sonata _does_ have id3 editing. You just need to install tagpy and taglib.

Shameless self promotion, but you may want to try Goggles Music Mananger. It's in the community repository. It doesn't do ratings though, but you may like it anyway

I use mpd + ncmpc.
For tag editing i just use gtkpod which i have anyway for managing my ipod.

googlesmm is not there in repos or in aur..

Uhmm not sure what you call lightweight, but Quod Libet feels rather heavy in memory use IMHO.

thats true gogglesguy, but is there really a functional replacement for all that it does and without the load of rhythmbox or amarok, etc.

I guess you have to make choices on what you find important to have vs system requirements.

Yeah.... i think they're very non-scientific and unrepresentative.
Just checked up here, mpd is using 0.8% of 1gb ram, that is, *8mb*
So... yeah, either all those applications are terrible, or those results are very fubar.

I agree... I've had MPD running and playing for the past 18 hours and it's using 6mb. MPD is very very lightweight by it's self.
Sonata is using 34mb, but I know there's alot lighter-weight clients out there.
edit: and the funny thing is, sonata (and mpd combined) beats all those music players, and it's got tons of features

could u please outline few features of sonata+mpd.
Also, how does one find how much memory a particular program is using. Htop shows one app in many lines and different memory and cpu usages.

Or mpd+gmpc for me it's even better then sonata... IMHO

Just go and try something. The time you've burnt in this thread, could have been used trying out different applications, and you could have found something to use by now.
As for features, Google. Sonata and all the other applications here have homepages, with screenshots and details.

now I would say mpd+sonata+tagpy+taglib combinatino rocks.

I've tried many linux clients, and I still don't like ANY of them
Back in win I was using foobar2000.
First in Linux I tried foobar2000 with wine, but sound glitches so that was not an option.
Than I tried xmms: It's winamp like and I hate winamp, so xmms was swiftly uninstalled.
Than I tried banshee: I'm currently using banshee, but it's far too heavy, and doesn't support queue of songs.
Than I tried rhythmbox, but it doesn't support ide tag editing.
Than I tried Quod Libet, but it doesn't support multiple playlist tabs (like foobar2000, and the only ones near foobar in that - banshee and rhythmbox)
Than I tried gogglesmm, but sound was glitchy as in foobar2000 + wine.
Than I tried mpd + Sonata, but I can't start mpd (Don't know why the reason I'm writing here)
So I copied /etc/mpd.conf.example to /etc/mdp.conf and then when I write /etc/rc.d/mpd start (as root) I just get FAIL and I have no idea why. Someone can help me (Or find me a foobar2000 like player for linux.)
EDIT:
Fixed the problem by looking in the wiki. Now we shall see whether I like mpd + sonata or no.
EDIT 2:
I tried mpd + various clients and I think they all suck... In my opinion moc(p) is better than all of them, but I don't like command line based clients.

install tagpy and taglib and u will have ide tag editing capabilities in sonata although gimmix does the same without tagpy and taglib but with sonata, its more functional.

Gimmix uses taglib also.
