I installed the flashplugin package to view youtube vodeo and such things in my browser. But unfortunately the sound won't work. The video plays as normal I just can't hear anything. It's not a general sound problem though, because sound in all the other applications works alright.
To try the flashplugin I even shut all the sound-apps down, in case they engage the sound-card. I also removed the local folders as .macromedia and .mozilla in case there were some old preferences or files from other times, when I used other distributions.
The problem still remains after all and I don't now where to change the settings, or whatever is needed to make the sound work with flash as well.
Maybe you can help me. If you need some more infos, let me know...
Flashplgin version:
flashplugin 9.0.31.0-1
Update:
Another hint is, that alsamixer won't launch as well. The message:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
Sound in GNOME apps still works fine though. If I try as root, alsamixer works as well.

Is esd running? You can go to a term as root and try:
/etc/rc.d/esd stop
Then try seeing if you get sound from Flash. ESD and other things using Alsa can't run at the same time -- at least I can't make them. (To "re-anable"esd, run /etc/rc.d/esd start.)

I know that it wouldn't work with ESD. But I actually forgot to say that no ESD is running.
But thanks for your advice anyway.

Somehow you are right. Due to some more research I have already done, I figured out that my system uses OSS instead of ALSA, for some reason.
Eventhough all ALSA devices are there, none of them would work. Also my external USB soundcard works only with OSS. That is of course the reason Flash plays no sound.
Unfortunately I am using epiphany as my default browser and
aoss epihpany
doesn't seem to work. Maybe I should install Firefox too.
But I think it would be a better way to configure that more globably anyway. How can I force all applications to use OSS by default (or at least flash).
I also would like to know how to change the default soundcard. For example if I want to use my external card, rather than the internal one. The internal soundcard seems to be /dev/dsp1 und the external one is /dev/dsp2 und I can use it already with Skype, because Skype let's me change the soundcard. Unfortunately I am not able to use the GNOME sound settings to change my default soundcard, like it was in Ubuntu. I hope somebody can give me some advice for that.
Sorry for so many questions at one ;-)

I happen to have excactly the same problem. I use xfce4 and Arch64, and I can't get sound with firefox. Any ideas?

Thanks a lot!!!
That was the first helpful answer on this topic. Someone should really now to use that package, it's even in the unstable repos. But once installed it just works. Nice!
If I would find out how to switch the default soundcard, my Arch-Linux setup would be just perfect.

np:)
]you may be able to do so form System>Preferences>Sound ( ans/or Multimedia, i can't see it here anymore, i assume they've been merged )... also, many multimedia apps support the configuration of their sound systems. good luck

Well, System -> Sound and Multimedia was the first place I checked. But I always just could select OSS or ALSA but not the default Soundcard. But I played arround with it again and just used the Mutlimedia Settings dialog and chose the Manual configuration string. I just tried the line "ossink device=/dev/dsp2" and it works. ;-) Though it was just guessing the syntax. Now I am fine thanks to all the people who helped in this thread.
Update:
Unfortunately the rest of the gstreamer apps (Totem, Rhythmbox...) give a shit about these settings. Actually the test sound in the config window works well, but all other applications still use the other soundcard. What a pitty...
