heya,
I have a problem with dynamic plugging in an external screen into my laptop like a beamer or TV
I know this is still troublesome for linux but I thought it would have been better with the new Xorg and nvidia-settings...
the second device gets detected nicely and I can use twinview to activate it, but maximizing windows will strech the window over both screens, which is not what it want :-/
when I use dual screen setup and "store to xorg.conf" it works, but totally messes up my xorg settings (ignoring any language or keyboard settings ...)
Is there any smooth solution not looking totally unprofessional when doing a presentation ?

The usable screen extened over all screen acerage is called "xcinerama" if you go to the following and search for this, a pdf document on the subject comes up. Hopefully of some help. I'm no expert but we have this setup on our workstations in the office.

Xinerama is supposed to be offered by twinview out of the box, all over the place it says it doesn't needs to be activated (it's not even offered in nvidia-settings)
For a stationary use like you have it in your office it is no problem, but dynamic switching of monitors is a pain in the ass using xorg files

I'm using this setup on my notebook / primary PC.
What's the problem? You don't need a 2nd screen to be plugged always for having it configured. You can just configure the 2nd device, and have none plugged at all.
So, store the settings once, change your settings to fit your needs (language, mouse drivers, keyboard drivers) and let the rest as it is.
The problem with different resolutions will be solved soon, as soon as the new xorg is released and nvidia brougth an appropriate driver for this.
btw: I'm having always the same resolution on the 2nd screen of my notebook, since it is the one i use for presentations, and i usually don't plug another screen. The beamers are all fine with 1024x768 here).
Yours,
Georg

I have the same problems with Gnome and Twinview. I found that if I enabled Twinview on the fly via nvidia-settings, no xinerama niceness happens, but after I saved the the Twinview xorg.conf and started X up, Gnome caught the xinerama extensions and things opened up nicely.
