I'm running VMWare Workstation for Linux v. 6.0.0 build-45731. My guest OS is Windows 2000, though I don't think that's relevant for these problems:
(1) After every reboot, I have to re-run vmware-config.pl. Otherwise, I get an error about /dev/vmnet0 not existing. I've tried several workarounds, including a udev rule to explicitly create /dev/vmnet*, but nothing works except re-running vmware-config.pl.
(2) Since I last upgraded gcc, I get this message:
Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.1.2", while you are trying to use
"/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.2.0". This configuration is not recommended and
VMware Workstation may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same
compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler
"/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.2.0" anyway? [no]
Is my only option to rebuild my kernel?
Thanks.

Well, I finally got rid of problem #1 by following the Arch-VMWare wiki at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Installing_VMware more carefully. I hadn't made the necessary changes to the startup script, i.e., the script listed at Kernel 2.6 and udev, #2 "Start/stop script".
