I loaded up the stock 64 bit version, and I can't believe how much better it runs than the 2.43 version in the repos. I have an object with 414720 vertices, 828144 edges, and 413425 faces - a fairly substantial object - and the interface is still very responsive. With the other build, it was tripping up on the same object. But I digress...
The optimized builds at www.graphicall.org should get the 32 bit Blenderheads up and running happily.

Don't upgrade your package to 2.44, it is broken (crashes during save) - original Blender binary from blender.org is OK.

If you copy over files from /usr/share/blender/ to ~/.blender Everything works fine. There's also some hidden files in there also that you need to copy.
