There might also be an OSS proprietary driver for what you use, but I recommend ALSA with a well supported card. My SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 sounds just as good using analogue outputs as my onboard nVIDIA Soundstorm did with its proprietary OSS drivers and using an optical output, so I started using it instead a few months ago or so. That used to not be the case, but it seems that ALSA had made great strides since the last time I tested it before switching to the card then.
