Anyway, back on topic.

Wondered if archlinux.org could put a web interface to the irc channel on the site.

I did a quick one here: http://archlinux.us/irc.html

Seems to work ok for me, logs me on as GuestXX. Change nick using /nick username if you want.
Just an idea, not sure if it would be useful or not. It's basically pjirc with some tweaks to color etc.

Would make it easy for someone to join irc from a web browser.

That's certainly neat. And I guess it wouldn't put a whole lot of strain on the server, as it's running client side...

Indeed it's just a java applet, harmless to the server, really. I suppose it should be locked down to only join #archlinux* channels or something to keep it from becoming something people use just to chat in general.

Why would we need something like this?
The client can be downloaded from that site, and run as a standalone java app too.
I don't see how Arch having this on a site is any real benefit....

Let me state it another way: What problem does this solve?

I have it setup for my users of usalug.org and opensuse.us, mostly just for convenience.
It's handy. A quick way to get to irc from the web.
Users don't have to know how to use irc to get there..... not that this applies to arch users

IDK, it was just a thought .... not sure WHY you would need lock it down to only allow connections to archlinux, not sure if that's even possible or not, i haven't checked. Since it's on the users computer anyway, i don't see that as an issue myself. Just thought it might be a nice feature to have for some.

people's laziness. it's easier to click once and talk right away than to find, install, work out how to use, and join a channel with another irc client.

That's not a laziness issue, its a convenience issue. If your Arch box is broken and you need help, its quite possible you borrowed a friend's computer and they don't want you installing an IRC client. This solves that problem. The laziness issue is really whether or not one of the developers wants to take the time to set it up.
