i have started the HAL daemon with dbus in my "/etc/rc.conf" but when i put any CD into it it does not mount it automatically. Whether HAL is ON or OFF, it does not make any difference on my system.
P.S. - i know Audio CDs do not mount and VCDs do not need to, you can use "vcdxrip" to rip them.

hey.. i know that. on my system HAL worked without any problem in Arch Gimmick but after that i tried Voodo beta1, beta2 and now Duke and in all 3 of them HAL does not work. yes i first start dbus then i start HAL. BTW, now i have put them into "/etc/rc.conf" in "dbus hal" order but as i said it NEVER works, not even once :-(.. may be a bug

If you have a line in fstab for a device, hal will skip it. Just a thought.

Are you sure HAL isn't working and it's something else? Also, don't put dbus after hal in the DAEMONS array... it will try to start it again and will fail. It needs to dbus the hal, or just hal (best idea).
Also, I just reread your post... HAL doesn't mount things by itself, you need a volume-manager to interact with it.

it means i need to remove "/dev/cdrom, /dev/dvd and /dev/fd0" lines from /etc/fstab ?

i said "dbus hal" and hence dbus comes before hal.
