Serial to USB cable

I'm trying to hook up my hardware modem to my laptop with a serial > USB converter cable (damn whoever decided to get rid of legacy ports) but I don't know where it comes up in /dev (or wherever else.) What should I be putting in /etc/wvdial.conf as the location of my modem for everything to work right?

let me tell you an easier way to find it, start your machine , check ls -ltr /dev/tts
no plug in the modem to your machine and do ls -ltr /dev/tts once more.
