The greeter application appears to be crashing

Hi

I have just installed Arch for the first time. I have an Athlon 1900+XP with an ATi Radeon 9700 Pro. I have installed GNOME and have been trying to get in to the GUI... I get the following message "The greeter application appears to be crashing"... Any ideas please? I am totally stuck now.

Put exec gnome-session in your ~/.xinitrc and run startx, does that work?

Yes but my mouse is screwed up... it is stuck in the top left hand corner?!
