Things that Ubuntu has taught me

1. 1024x768 should be good enough for anyone. Even on a 17'' Trinitron.

2. Vi isn't designed to be difficult to use; it's designed to screw you over.

3. Package management is hard. Don't expect your PC to do anything else while it's installing or removing packages, it might overexert itself!

4. Manual configuration is for sissies.

5. Life is not a race. Be patient. You can wait while the timer icon ticks away the seconds...

Re: Things that Ubuntu has taught me

Besides gnome-system-tools, Ubuntu doesn't actually have many administrative tools so a lot of manual configuration is actually required.
But I agree about the package management thing. I'm not a fan of Debian packaging.
And about the monitor resolution, that's probably just a misconfigured xorg.conf

Re: Things that Ubuntu has taught me

I'm comfortable running Arch, but the lack of some specialized packages in the AUR (mostly OCaml and Haskell libs for playing) brought me to Ubuntu again. In doing that, I've realized that sometimes (remember, sometimes) I don't want to configure everything by hand.

This is not a negative towards Arch -- I love it, and aside from a good selection of packages, it's by far my favorite distribution -- but rather a defence of Ubuntu. Ubuntu has, as far as I can tell, done more for linux in it's lifetime then any other distribution. Stop with the elitism. smile

What's wrong with 1024x768 on 17''?

Most 17" monitors can do 1280x1024.

Re: Things that Ubuntu has taught me

I never thought of using anything bigger than 1024x768 on 17'', honestly; no matter how big a resolution it supports.

Re: Things that Ubuntu has taught me

lucke, it really depends on the monitor. A CRT monitor will look better at 1024x768 but a LCD monitor will look best at 1280x1024

Re: Things that Ubuntu has taught me

I don't really like these "let's make fun of distribution X because it works differently" threads....
I admit..i used to indulge in my fair share of distro bashing.. but it really does just end up to be pointless ego stroking in the long run.
