GNOME is very slow

Lately GNOME is very slow in opening apps, many applications fail or stop responding. On occasion everything freezes to where all I can do is move the mouse. But no key strokes or mouse clicks register.

did you put your  "hostname" in "/etc/hosts" ?

i had the same problem many months ago and at that time i did not know you put hostname in /etc/hossts e.g. my hostname is "arch" (which resides in "/etc/rc.conf") and i put "arch" in "/etc/hosts" like this:

127.0.0.1       arch          localhost

Holy crap thank you, I had totally forgot about that.  My computer was sssslow, thanks for reminding me.  Makes perfect sense why vim would take 2 secs to start...

Re: GNOME is very slow

Some more info would be nice. While it is slow, just try to fire up top and watch for cpu load. A list of programs you usually have running is also helpful.

Re: GNOME is very slow

cpu load fluctuates alot anywhere from 3% to 40%.

Generally the only programs i have running are Firefox, Pidgin, and Sonata

Re: GNOME is very slow

How much CPU power and RAM do you have?
-> gnome needs 256RAM and 1Ghz for normal and fluent function.
it still works on 500Mhz and 128 RAM but then it is agony.
