Some help with GTK, Japanese and TTF fonts

I've been studying Japanese for some time now and I already have my IM (Input Method) working fine, but I'm having some aesthetic problems.

One of them is while I'm using Opera (I don't know about others QT apps that aren't related to KDE), it shows some awful non-TTF fonts. Is there anyway to use TTF with Opera?

The other is when I using GTK+ or KDE apps. Lets say that I'm running pidgin and I'm using a font that doesn't support Japanese Kana. If I type anything in Japanese, it'll appear as "The font I was using + another font that supports Japanese writing" and then come back to the first font I was using, what I think is pretty nice.
The problem is that this 'font that supports Japanese writing' is quite uninteligible at small sizes and I'd like it to change to another font.
