many things slow

hi all, first of all, sry for my bad english.
i have the problem that the responsability of many thing is really bad. i have installed kde, when i click on the firefox icon, then the next 10 seconds happens nothing, then the hdd led begins to blink, an then firefox opens. but what happpens in this 10 seconds? any idea to fix this bug?
or nearly the same thing, when i shutdown, then the monitor gets black, but i see the mouse pointer and i can move him, and after about 10 second, the hdd begins to work, and then i see theshutdown messages.
so there are again about 10 seconds. i dont know why.

is lo enabled? is your hostname in /etc/hosts?

How about your localhost in rc.conf? I am not entirely sure, but I think it's better if you give your hostname a different name. Here is how my /etc/hosts looks like:

#<ip-address>   <hostname.domain.org>   <hostname>
127.0.0.1               localhost.localdomain   localhost theraft

And this is the relevant part of rc.conf (under the heading "Networking"):

HOSTNAME="theraft"

Usually when the system is not very responsive like your there is a problem with your localhost/hostname, as far as I know...
