I think he mean instead of the penguin on boot up( i could be wrong)... then again I don't even use that at all. Still would be nice smile.

I think source mage has something like that... from what I remember under their kernel install section you can install a patch to put a crow logo on during the bootup.

The LinuxLogo is a text program that show an ascii logo with info about the OS and system, in some distros it run on daemon mode and every time you log-out (on text console) it refresh the console, show the ascii logo with info and the login prompt. It´s very nice   wink

i read some time ago, that there exist some library that convets bitmaps to ascii - but never found such a thing because i forgot how it is called

It's not too hard to make a converter yourself even...but depending on how you do it it can take a while(if you want to get accurate shapes in a small area, you have to store the pixels used in each character in an array).
