Making dvd video - Help & tips?

Hi.

I've tested making a dvd, installed lots of tools, for example Devede. I followed the guide on http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mak … ght_to_DVD, and burned my dvd file to a disc.

Now I have some questions...  I appreciate any ideas or tips to solve my, at this time, issues.

1. There's lines in the movie.

The finished dvd iso-file has lines in it, unlike the original mpg file. Is there some setting I might have missed or a command misused? On the screenie you see lines all over the movie and I can't really tell what made them...

Movie above viewed with mplayer dvd:// -dvd-device movie.iso, same file I burned to the disc.

2. Normalizing sound?

The music in the movie is quite loud while the 'normal' sounds(talking, environment) is to low. Is there a way to normalize the sound channels when creating the dvd?

// Thanks in advance.

Looks like sound bars in the video.......

Ok... Thank you.

And a suggestion or pointer to further info would be?

Google, wiki and other 'dvd making sites' don't help me much when I don't know what to look for .)

Still looking though, but feel free to add pointers.

Re: Making dvd video - Help & tips?

Just a few wild guesses pulled from my hindquarters.

I've had pretty good luck using ffmpeg to encode to DVD ready mpg. Then using makexml and makedvd from the tovid package (in AUR) to create the final product.

So, try using tovid to author the DVD and see if there is a difference.  Could also be just a bad batch of DVD blanks, so might want to look at that too.

Normalizing dvd video can be a pain.  If encoding from a avi/mpg/wmv/etc file, tovid has an option to normalize the audio.

good luck

Look up deinterlacing. mencoder can normalize sound.

+1 for tovid.  I used it last night to convert an avi file (1-hour TV episode) to DVD, it has all the tools to encode the movie and burn the disc.  Get the package in AUR.

Hello.

I got the PKGBUILD from AUR a few mins ago and this happened:

[root@apc tovid]# makepkg
==> ERROR: tovid is not available for the 'i686' architecture.
Note that many packages may need a line added to their PKGBUILD
    such as arch=('i686').

when I added the line suggested, arch=('i686'), I got:

[root@apc tovid]# makepkg
==> ERROR: install scriptlet (tovid.install) does not exist.

Any pointers? Second time I use something from AUR so I'm still a tad new on this smile

Re: Making dvd video - Help & tips?

You're supposed to get the tovid.tar.gz archive from AUR, unpack it and run makepkg in that directory.

Duh me.. Seems I forgot something there. Thanks.

Though I recall downloading a PKGBUILD earlier and it downloaded the source via wget, unpack and compiled it..

EDIT: Ups, remember now.. when I saw the tarball extract, including the install file  smile

EDIT 2:

But I still get the ==> ERROR: tovid is not available for the 'i686' architecture.

I'll try add that into the pkgfile.

EDIT 3:

It helped to add arch=('i686') to the pkgfile.

Re: Making dvd video - Help & tips?

Hello all again.

I've installed tovid and its dependencies, rebooted(several times in fact), but there seems to be complaints when I try to
start tovidgui.

I get the line tovidgui requires wxPython 2.6; please install or upgrade wxPython.

But I got 2.8, surely tovid should be able to use that one?

[root@apc ~]# pacman -S wxpython
:: wxpython-2.8.0.1-1: local version is up to date. Upgrade anyway? [Y/n] n
warning: wxpython-2.8.0.1-1 is up to date -- skipping
local database is up to date
[root@apc ~]#

Do I have to link something? I recall some libraries(long ago) needed a link from for example lib.so.1.2 need a link to lib.so.1 and so on.

Re: Making dvd video - Help & tips?

As for the sound: You want to compress, not normalize (make soft sounds louder and make loud sounds softer == compression. Normalizing makes everything louder with the loudest sound reaching the level you're normalizing to...). See if your audio-encoder has an option to do this

Thank you.

When I manage to start up the gui for tovid I'll check to see what buttons there are, until then I'll dig around to try fix the error smile

I found a solution, sort of, on the 2.6 vs 2.8 thing: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=254545

It starts up when I, in a command prompt, type tovidgui, but it only shows an empty pane.. No errors or messages whatsoever in the shell..

Quest goes on smile
