Gnome voice control, speech recognition for our Desktop Environment :)

It's not fully functional (version 0.2) but I'm happy they're developing such an application. I thought I might just share it with you. What do you think? I personally would never see myself using it, if not for the fun of it. But I can see the potential for the impaired people, opening new frontiers for Linux. I know there are some other speech recognition projects, but I like to see this one being embedded in Gnome.

it would be cool if s.th. like global-hot-words would work... like for controlling the mediaplayer and so on... could be usefull if you have a pc in your car - its safer and less expensive than a touchscreen, and it has a Knight-Rider-potential....

Is it that bad at reconizing things or is it mainly his accent causing the problem in the demo?

Edit: Compiled & Installed it ... how do you run it, I tried typing "gnome-voice-control" but no luck.

I hope it's only because of his accent. As far as I understand the speech recognition is based on some platform of speech recognition software, called Sphinx or something like that. So I guess it takes standard English accent.

As for running it, I haven't tried it, as I said in my previous post I don't fancy anything like that on my machine, especially in such an early state. I thought it was an interesting feature anyways. I think you have to add it to the Gnome panel, I guess it's like a normal applet. Can you see it in the list?

No I cant see it in the add panel list (which it says its sapposed to be to) .

It configured fine, it installed fine (make && make install went ok as far as I know). I dont see it in the apps list :'(.

I'd really love to try it too, reminds me of my dads mac mini, he uses speech recognition on that all the time.

Well, at this point I suggest you to ask the developers themselves, since they've put up the blog and seem quite easily reachable...
